Beaver facts
For about 250 years from the early 1600s, the beaver was at the heart of the fur trade, the commercial pillar of New France.
Coureurs des bois trapped and traded prime beaver pelts, which were shipped to Europe and felted into hats.
The Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste, founded in Montréal in 1834 by Ludger Duvernay, promoted the beaver and the maple leaf as national symbols.
In Québec French the beaver is le castor.
